We are studying the attributes of shapes. Yesterday in math we created 3 and 5-sided shapes with straws and pipe cleaners. We talked about the differences and similarities in the shapes using attribute words such as: angles, parallel sides, vertices and sides. The kids loved this opportunity to explore shapes in a different way and someone even asked me, "How is this even learning?"

Hard Workers
Today we practiced reading about a nonfiction topic and taking notes about things we find interesting or we think we'd like to teach to someone else. We are learning about butterflies, so everyone was reading different books about butterflies. It was so much fun listening to the kids share their facts with each other. I was so proud when I looked around the room and saw everyone so hard at work.

We Are Scientists!
We are learning to write lab reports like scientists. After going through the process one time together as a whole class, the students have begun to create their own experiments. They are tasked with designing an experiment that changes just one variable and coming up with a question that they would like to answer. There is some great thinking going on in our classroom!

Candy Cane Science
Which liquid will dissolve a candy cane the fastest?
First, the second graders made some predictions about which liquid (cool water, warm water or vinegar) would dissolve the candy cane the fastest. Then they tested out their predictions. Ask them what they learned. It was so much fun to watch them be so excited and engaged during this experiment!

Random Acts of Kindness
We have been talking about the importance of random acts of kindness, especially during a month when giving is often focused on material items. We've learned that just giving someone a smile or letting someone know that you appreciate them can really make someone's day. I was very proud of how thoughtful the second graders were today when they were creating their letters to let someone know that they're appreciated.
